How To

Last November About.com put together an awesome tutorial on how to use Yard Sale Treasure Map. The instructions are explained there more concisely than I can explain myself so if you want some pointers, check it out!

Time Saving Tutorials also put together some excellent videos of a dated version of YSTMPart I and Part II.

It could be a wonderful resource for everybody. BUT at least half of the listings for Portland are way wrong! Portland page shows street address listings for the WRONG CITY about half of the time. Even the wrong state! SE addresses are often displayed on the SW side of Portland. Make sure that posters use a correct zip code, and that your program can handle it…………………………elsullo

  2. admin says:

Ah, if only craigslist users would write out full US postal addresses on their listings life would be so much easier for the rest of us! But alas, this is not so. If one YSTM user spends 5 minutes correcting addresses (or removing incorrect addresses) for their city, the entire YSTM community in your area will benefit.

I also did a check in Portland, but could not find sales mapped to the wrong state. Please provide examples and I will see if I can improve things. Thanks!

tried submitting a Yard Sale post, but youyr form / page would not accept any entries into the fields shown.
Also, how do you type in a URL when you don’t have one?
If its your site and creates an entry on your page, it should be able to capture that url when the post or ad is made?

  4. admin says:

    Hi Don,

For this form it is my intention to gently nudge sellers to post their ad on craigslist to help their visibility. I will need to update that page to make it more clear for people what needs to happen since I’ve gotten a few comments recently. Please create an ad on craigslist, then copy the url onto the form. Once you’ve copied the url, the other fields will become usable to you.

    Thanks and good luck!

How can I change the default starting location? It always starts
at Saint Louis, MO When I Don’t live there anymore!

  6. admin says:

If you have cookies enabled on your browser, YSTM will remember your last search location for you. Try checking your cookie settings.

  7. Terry says:

Any way to save my map after I delete sales I don’t want. I would like to prep on Friday for Saturday morning sales – and then just do a double check before leaving the house to have the software add any late listers for Saturday on Craigslist. Thanks!

  8. admin says:

That’s a great idea. I will add it to my todo list. I am starting to redo the site in a more user friendly way so you should start to see this type of functionality soon.

  9. KJ says:

Another feature that would be great is to be able to search the “other ads” for a keyword. My listings today have 416 pages of “other ads”, and I’m just not about to page through them all. If I could search them for my town, or a few neighboring ones, I could narrow it down pretty quickly.

  10. admin says:

This one is definitely on my list. It’s rather complicated which is why it hasn’t happened yet, but I will have this ready by the spring.

  11. Brilliant write-up and actually will help with learning the subject matter better.

  12. I volunteer as the coordinator for a county wide yard sale in rural NW Montana. Sanders Saleing is a fundraising event for a non-profit organization. Thanks to mention of your program in Real Simple magazine I discovered your yard saleing tool for communities (a true answer for a problem we have with mapping individual yard sales). I want to sign up right now. I’ve tried to add the official address of one of the places holding a sale and keep getting that I’m not putting the correct address. Since it’s rural Montana, I’d say that event the Post Office doesn’t have address correct since our whole county had an address overhaul a couple years ago. Is there a way to overwrite the error/fix the location so I can get all the participating sales included and the addresses correct???

I love your site and app. It is very intuitive and easy to use. I have one suggestion to make it even better. When using the “add a sale” option, could you add a way to add Neighborhood/Community sales, when they only list their street address, but not a house number. It would be great to select the general area on the map and leave a custom marker for that neighborhood.

  14. Dblscup says:

It appears that ads are feeding from Craigslist to this app. How do I make my current ad show on this app? I want to see my posted Rummage Sale, show on this app. How do I make that happen? Does this cost money?

  15. Dblscup says:

Please confirm…is it just ads on Craigslist that are showing, or can these be posted seperately. LOVE this app by the way. Sincerely, An Avid Rummager

  16. admin says:

    Hi,

Yes the app gets it’s sales from craigslist and from yardsaletreasuremap.com. I recommend creating a craigslist ad so that you get the most visibility. When a craigslist ad includes a complete and valid street address yardsaletreasuremap.com will find it and display it. Additionally if you prefer, you can add your sale directly to yardsaletreasuremap.com using the “Add Sales” tab.

  17. admin says:

The ads can also be posted separately, directly at http://yardsaletreasuremap.com. Thanks!

  18. Dblscup says:

I created my Craigslist ad last night, but it is not showing on my phone/app

  19. Dblscup says:

My ad has a complete address, but didn’t ad it to your site. :o ( I think I added manually, but not sure if I did it right. Not sure why it didn’t grab my ad originally from last night. Sale is at 2615 24th ST. Kenosha, Wi 53140

  20. weeha says:

is there anyway to just see the map with the posts, it is too small to print out and I can’t figure out how to make the map larger when I print it

  21. wini smith says:

How can I print just the map without all the directions? I know pretty much where I’m going, just need the map to remind me which one comes next.

Also, could we be able to delete the empty markers…sales we have deleted, but the little balloons are still there?

  22. admin says:

You can hit the vertical white bar immediately to the left of the map to make the map full screen. Then zoom and center your map appropriately and print! You can also hit the Google Maps button (immediately to the right of the print button) to use Google’s features if they have a different way to print that you are more used to.

  23. Tom says:

Is it possible when using the search sales feature (Step 2), to only view the marker for those sales that matched the search criteria and then create an literary with those sales that were located or just use the map for visual reference?

  24. Melissa says:

Every time I try to add sales to my map, the add button appears to be “pressed” and then nothing happens. Can anyone give me advice on this?

  25. Scott Marlow says:

This is by far the best app of it’s type (iphone). I hope you don’t mind my feedback on how it make it perfect (for me at least):

Every time I start the app, it defaults to Saturday and zooms out to show to whole USA. Why not default to the current day and to the local search area? It seems to clear my search location each tie and I have to re-enter it.

Best thing about your app is that it continually shows where I am relative to the indicated sales. But the map orientation stays “north” and it’s hard to stay oriented when roaming the twisting streets. I would be so much easier if the rotated to my current direction like GPS navigators do.

A filter to know what sales start on which days would save a lot of time. Color coding the pins according to start dates would be a simple way to do this.
Like a lot of people, I like to shop sales when they first open and not already picked over. Being able to mark the sales I’ve already been to would be equally helpful.

One feature I like on some of the other apps is how they color code (or use a special icon) for Estate sales.

Hope this is helpful. I would gladly pay for a Pro version with these added benefits. I don’t mind to ads, but they do take up valuable space on that little iphone screen and, again would pay to see them go away.

Thanks for listening. Keep up the good work. Scott

  26. Trudy McDaniel says:

Just tried the app on m y iPod and it does not show the sales on the map for my location, though it says there are 9. Would also help if it could remember my location without me having to reenter it each time I try to get it to work. Just wish it could work like it does on my pc in Firefox.

  27. Lee Sturkie says:

How can I cancel or change the date on my yard sale???

  28. admin says:

The easiest thing is to find your sale on the website and change the date to a time in the past.

  29. ralph says:

when i try to log in to ystm website it goes to mobile ap, how do i log in to your site? thanks, ralph

  30. CONNIE says:

I LOVE THIS! I USE THIS GUIDE EVERY WEEK. ANY WAY YOU COULD ADD THE CITY, AND NOT JUST THE STREET ADDRESS? TOO MANY CITIES TO KNOW WHERE TO START. THANKS

  31. admin says:

I’m not sure I understand. The search feature lets you use anything you want to search. I like to just type in a zip code. Then you can change the search radius to only show sales nearest to your search.

  32. admin says:

I can’t answer your question without knowing what type of device you are using. They all behave a bit differently.

  33. SKP says:

    Hi,

I can’t figure out how to add a garage sale to my route. I click on the garage sale and then put a *star on the one I want to include my route…..however, when i go to my route its empty! HELP!

  34. admin says:

I haven’t seen this problem… I posted an app update (v4.1) in September that fixed some “my route” issues. Maybe you’re running an older device that can’t get the new update? I’ll do some more testing. A new update will be available later this month.

  35. Traci says:

Hi! My community is hosting a city wide garage sale. I would like to create a map of just the households participating in the garage sale to print and hand out to the shoppers. Can I create my own map on this site?

  36. admin says:

Hi Traci, click on the “Community Sales” link on the main page to create your own community yard sale maps. Here is the direct link.

  37. Gary says:

I just downloaded Yard Sales to my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Your map stays in portrait only. Is there any way to have it switch to the landscape mode? It is a great program. We used it with my Verizon Jetpack today and hit about 12 yard sales. Just because your program was so much fun.
